Oklahoma State basketball coach Steve Lutz previews Bedlam showdown
Sam Godwin played the game of his life.
The Ada native dropped a career-high 20 points on 10 of 14 shooting in a renewed neutral-site Bedlam matchup.
Behind Godwin’s career-best performance, No. 13 Oklahoma defeated Oklahoma State 80-65 Saturday night at Paycom Center in the 250th all-time meeting between the two programs.
With their win, the Sooners moved to 3-0 in their last three Bedlam contests and improved to 10-0 for the second time in as many seasons.
OU star true freshman guard Jeremiah Fears finished with 17 points.
The Cowboys were led by Marchelus Avery, who scored 19 points.
Here are four takeaways from the Sooners’ Bedlam win:
Godwin was a man on a mission.
Not only did Saturday mean more to him as a lifelong follower of the rivalry but he needed to get his centerpiece back. Following last season’s overtime thriller win in Stillwater, Godwin stole the Bedlam trophy, thinking it’d be the final meeting between the two in-state rivals.
Godwin was forced to return the trophy, which he’d been displaying by his fireplace throughout the year, this past week.
In addition to his career-high in scoring, Godwin added 14 rebounds for a double-double. He also finished with two blocks and three steals.
Two of Godwin’s points came off an assist from fellow Oklahoman Dayton Forsythe, who found a crashing Godwin for an easy dunk.
When he exited the floor for the final time with over a minute remaining, he was met with a standing ovation and a hug from head coach Porter Moser.
Now, Godwin can keep his decor. At least until the next Bedlam matchup.
Kobe Elvis and Jeremiah Fears continued their stellar starts to the year.
Elvis drilled five 3-pointers and finished with 15 points on 5 for 8 shooting from the field. In addition to his 17 points, Fears dished five assists.
Fears showed off his leaping ability with a fastbreak, two-handed jam. He also knocked down two 3s in the second half, an area he’s struggled in thus far.
The Sooners’ consistent guard play from Elvis and Fears, as well as Duke Miles and Brycen Goodine on any given night has been a significant reason for their 10-0 start to the season.
When OSU big man Abou Ousmane missed a 3-pointer midway through the first half, it was clear this wouldn’t be the Cowboys’ shooting night.
The 6-foot-10 Ousmane hadn’t missed a 3 all season, hitting all five he had attempted prior to Saturday. But the perfect streak ended at the 7 ½ minutes into Bedlam — and not only that, but the Pokes’ regular outside shooters were cold, too.
OSU missed its first five 3-point tries before Jamyron Keller broke the streak. Then the Cowboys missed five more for a 1 for 11 start.
The Sooners built their lead into double-digits and kept expanding it from there.
The Cowboys came in averaging just over 20 attempts per game and were shooting 35.3% from deep. Thanks to a few late hits to boost their rate, they converted 5 of 18 3-point tries (27.8%).
It came too late, but Marchelus Avery brought some fire to the OSU offense in the second half.
Avery had eight of his team-high 19 points in a 3 ½-minute span in the middle of the second half. He finished 3 of 4 from 3 as the only Cowboy to make more than one.
Sophomore Jamyron Keller came off the bench and seemed to bring some juice to the Cowboys in the first half.
He had all of his five points and three rebounds in a brief span when the Pokes were still within striking distance. But he played just seven minutes in the second half and did not attempt a shot.Next, OU faces Michigan in the Jumpman Invitational at 8 p.m. Wednesday at Spectrum Center in Charlotte, North Carolina (ESPN2). OSU hosts Tarleton State at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Gallagher-Iba Arena (ESPN+).
