Pakistan, USA cricket explore tri-series with Canada to boost cricket in North America

Date:

Dubai: In a bid to enhance cricket’s presence in North America, Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Chairman Mohsin Naqvi and USA Cricket CEO Johnathan Atkeison have discussed a potential tri-series involving Pakistan, the USA, and Canada.

The proposal, which was brought up during a crucial meeting in Washington on January 28, could be a game-changer for cricket in the region.

The meeting, attended by PSL CEO Salman Naseer, revolved around key strategies to develop and promote cricket across the United States and Canada.

The highlight of the discussions was the proposed tri-series, which would feature the national teams from Pakistan, the USA, and Canada. This initiative aims to provide a platform for players from all three countries to compete at a high level, while also raising the profile of the sport in North America.

“A tri-series between Pakistan, the USA, and Canada offers an exciting opportunity to showcase cricket talent in this part of the world,” said PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi, who is also Interior Minister of Pakistan.

“The USA, with its growing interest in the sport, and Canada, which has a rich cricketing history, are natural partners for Pakistan in this endeavor,” he added.

The potential series is seen as a major step in developing cricket in the USA, where the sport is still in its nascent stages. For Pakistan, the tri-series would offer an opportunity to further its influence in North America while providing a competitive environment for emerging cricketers from both countries.’

Bilateral series between Pakistan and USA

In addition to the tri-series, the boards also discussed the possibility of initiating bilateral series between Pakistan and the USA, covering both men’s and women’s cricket. These series would provide regular competition for USA Cricket’s teams, which are currently working to establish themselves on the international stage.

The meeting also explored collaborative efforts in coaching and player development, with plans for training programs in Pakistan aimed at improving the skills of USA Cricket coaches and players. Such initiatives would be crucial in building a solid foundation for the growth of the sport in the United States.

USA Cricket CEO Johnathan Atkeison expressed his enthusiasm for the partnership, acknowledging the valuable support from Pakistan. “The potential of this tri-series is immense,” Atkeison said. “Not only will it provide a competitive edge, but it will also foster the growth of cricket in North America.”

As part of the discussions, PCB Chairman Naqvi also extended an invitation to Atkeison to visit Pakistan during the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy, an event that promises to further strengthen ties between the two cricketing nations, reported ARY news.

The proposed tri-series could be a breakthrough moment for cricket in North America, providing a much-needed boost for USA Cricket and helping to foster a deeper connection between the three nations.

With Pakistan’s expertise and support, this partnership has the potential to significantly impact the development of the sport in the region, while also expanding Pakistan’s influence in global cricket.
