Pakistan’s Usman Qadir announces retirement from international cricket

Date:

The leg-spinner has played a solitary ODI and 25 T20Is for Pakistan in international cricket, with his last international appearance coming in the Asian Games in 2023

In what’s a rather unexpected development, Pakistan’s Usman Qadir has announced his retirement from international cricket at the age of 31.

Qadir represented the Dolphins in the recently-concluded Champions One Day Cup but had a disappointing outing, taking four wickets at an economy of 7.44. Just days after the conclusion of the competition, the leg-spinner has announced his international retirement.

“Today, I am announcing my retirement from Pakistan cricket, and as I reflect on this incredible journey, I want to express my heartfelt gratitude. It has been an immense honor to represent my country, and I’m thankful for the support of my coaches and teammates who have been with me every step of the way,” Qadir said in a statement posted on X.

“From unforgettable victories to the challenges we faced together, each moment has shaped my career and enriched my life. I’m deeply appreciative of the passionate fans who have always stood by me; your unwavering support has meant the world.”

The leg-spinner has played a solitary ODI and 25 T20Is for Pakistan in international cricket, with his last international appearance coming in the Asian Games in 2023. He debuted in 2020 and featured in the 2022 Asia Cup, where he made one appearance (against Sri Lanka). He was picked in Pakistan’s initial squad for the 2022 T20 World Cup in Australia but had to be withdrawn after fracturing his right thumb.

Usman is the son of legendary Pakistan spinner, the late Abdul Qadir.

“As I step into this new chapter, I will be continuing my dad’s legacy, embracing both my love for cricket and the lessons he instilled in me. I carry with me the spirit of Pakistan cricket and the cherished memories we created together,” the 31-year-old added.
