Patrick Mahomes 40 time: How NFL Network has trolled Chiefs QB with combine coverage

NFL Network is set to broadcast the NFL combine once again in 2025. That means NFL fans will likely be treated to one of the crew’s classic gags throughout the four-day event as prospects go through athletic testing in Indianapolis.

In recent years, NFL Network’s combine broadcast has featured a tool that has allowed them to overlay the 40-yard dash efforts of several players in one shot. Typically, this is used to highlight the high-level speed of certain athletes or to compare them directly to a talent at a similar position at the NFL level.

However, the NFL Network crew has also used the “Simulcam” to poke fun at one of the NFL’s best quarterbacks, Patrick Mahomes.

Mahomes posted an unspectacular time in the 40-yard dash at the 2017 NFL combine. In recent seasons, that time has been beaten by certain defensive linemen who have tipped the scales at far greater weight than the 225 pounds the Kansas City Chiefs star carries.

Here’s what to know about Mahomes’ 40 time, and the NFL Network’s running joke about it, ahead of the 2025 NFL combine.

What is Patrick Mahomes’ 40 time?

Mahomes ran the 40-yard dash in 4.8 seconds at the 2017 NFL combine. That tied Jerod Evans for the sixth-fastest mark among the 12 quarterbacks to run at the event.

Below is a look at Mahomes’ combine run:

History of NFL Network’s Patrick Mahomes 40 time joke

NFL Network first drew Mahomes’ ire in 2022 when it tried to outline just how impressive Desmond Ridder‘s 40-yard dash was at the event.

NFL Network showed Ridder running alongside a couple of sub-4.55 runners – Marcus Mariota and Russell Wilson – in the event. For some reason, Mahomes was tacked onto the group, where his 4.8-flat time was by far the slowest.

He took exception to that in a lighthearted social media post.

From there, the joking feud between Mahomes and NFL Network became a more frequent staple of the channel’s combine coverage.

To his credit, Mahomes has taken the ribbing in stride to date, though the Chiefs quarterback pleaded with NFL Network to stop using his 40-yard dash overlay before the 2024 iteration of the event.

Naturally, the NFL Network did not listen to his request. Instead, it was emboldened to use the overlay as frequently as possible.

That included showing how Mahomes’ run compared to that of 292-pound Braden Fiske and 366-pound T’Vondre Sweat.

Mahomes responded to NFL Network’s shenanigans with a simple GIF.

We’ll soon see if another chapter is added to this friendly rivalry in 2025.
