Penn State’s road game Saturday against West Virginia has been suspended due to severe weather and is expected to resume later this afternoon.
The initial delay came with three minutes left during halftime — at 2:04 p.m. — and was set to last at least 30 minutes, as the NCAA requires no nearby lightning strikes within that half-hour period. However, additional lightning strikes have continued to reset the clock.
A plan was put in place at 3:58 p.m. to begin warmups at 4:08 p.m. and resume play at 4:23 p.m., barring more lightning strikes in the area.
Monongalia County, which includes Morgantown, is under a severe thunderstorm watch until 7 p.m. Saturday, according to an alert issued by the National Weather Service. That watch began at 1:25 p.m.
Fans were required to leave the seating area in the stadium and seek shelter on the concourse or in their vehicle. They can return, with their game ticket, when play resumes.
Penn State led the game at the half, 20-6, after scoring a touchdown 26 seconds before the break.
