According to multiple reports, Penny Hardaway has made major late changes to his staff at Memphis. The Memphis Commercial Appeal confirmed that the following staff members have been let go:
Rick Stansbury (assistant coach). The former head coach at Western Kentucky (2016-23) and Mississippi State (1998-2012) had been on Penny’s staff since 2023.
Jermaine Johnson (assistant coach / director of analytics). Memphis native had been with the Tigers since 2020. Also spent time as an assistant at Troy, UT Martin, and Georgia Southern. Was the head coach at Melrose HS in Memphis from 2007-13.
Faragi Phillips (assistant coach). Had been at Memphis for the past two seasons. Was also an assistant to Jerry Stackhouse at Vandy. Had a ton of success as a HS coach at both Whitehaven and Mitchell high schools in Memphis.
Jamie Rosser (assistant coach / director of player development). Another Memphis native had been on Hardaway’s staff for the past two seasons. Also a former HS coach in Memphis, head coach at NJCAA Gaston College, and assistant at SEMO.
It is not known if any other moves will be made. As of now, Johnson is the only one who has been removed from the Tigers current roster.
This has been a busy off-season for the Tigers basketball staff – earlier departures this spring/summer have included: Andy Borman (assistant coach), Darby Rich (strength coach), Garrett Kelly (director of basketball operations), Jeremy Kipness (director of recruiting) and Andy Pennington (director of analytics).
