Prime Minister Narendra Modi began his two-day US visit on Wednesday (local time) as he landed in Joint Andrews Base to a warm welcome from the members of the Indian diaspora. Many members of the Indian diaspora braved cold winds and rains to catch a glimpse of the leader.

PM Modi is staying at the Blair House which is now adorned with the tricolour to mark the Indian Prime Minister’s visit to the US. Blair House is the official guesthouse of the US President.

Ahead of PM Modi’s visit, an excited member of the Indian diaspora said: “Indian-American diaspora is here to welcome PM Modi. We are so excited”.

PM Modi and US President Donald Trump share a strong bond and have met each other on several occasions, with both leaders visiting each other’s respective nations and holding mega-rallies in Houston and Ahmedabad before the Covid-19 pandemic.

Both leaders are set to discuss trade, bilateral ties, regional developments and issues of mutual interest when they meet in the White House.

PM Modi is among the few leaders to meet Donald Trump following the Republican’s return to the White House. A report by news agency Reuters said that Elon Musk, the billionaire tech mogul who owns X, Tesla, SpaceX and Boring Company, will also meet the Prime Minister to discuss if his internet provider Starlink has the scope to enter the Indian market.

Tariffs, which Donald Trump has threatened many countries with, are also likely to come up during the discussions.

US President Donald Trump committed Wednesday to announcing “reciprocal tariffs” on other countries, saying he could sign an order for them within a day.

Speaking in the Oval Office on Wednesday, Trump said that he could sign an order for reciprocal duties later in the day, or on Thursday morning.

Earlier on Wednesday, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt told reporters she believed Trump’s tariff plan could be announced before he meets with Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday.

Regional developments like the conflicts in Gaza and Ukraine will also be discussed. China and the role of Quad is also likely to feature in the talks between the two leaders.

Ahead of his visit to the US, PM Modi co-chaired a successful AI Action Summit in Paris, France and held extensive discussions with French President Emmanuel Macron during his three-day visit. He also briefly met US Vice-President JD Vance, US Second Lady Usha Vance and two of their three children, Vivek and Ewan, and took part in Vivek’s birthday celebrations.
