During his speech while addressing the Indian diaspora in Georgetown, Guyana, on Thursday, India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi highlighted the deep-rooted connections between India and Guyana, focusing on their shared heritage, with a special mention about cricket.
“Three things, in particular, connect India and Guyana deeply – culture, cuisine and cricket,” he said.
The Prime Minister further discussed the significant role cricket plays in strengthening the bilateral relationship between the two countries.
“Friends, the love for cricket also binds our nations strongly. It is not just a sport, it is a way of life, deeply embedded in our national identity,” the PM added.
“The Providence National Cricket Stadium in Guyana stands as a symbol of our friendship. (Rohan) Kanhai, (Alvin) Kallicharran, (Shivnarine) Chanderpaul are all well-known names in India. Clive Lloyd and his team have been a favourite of many generations. Young players from this region also have a huge fan-base in India. Some of these great cricketers are here with us today.”
He was later presented a bat by the West Indies legend and former captain Lloyd, autographed by the leading cricketers from Guyana.

Recalling the T20 World Cup co-hosted by the USA and West Indies in June this year, PM Modi appreciated the support the Indian team got in Guyana.
“Many of our cricket fans enjoyed the T20 World Cup that you hosted this year. Your cheers for the team in blue at their match in Guyana could be heard even back home in India,” he added, as the audience applauded with loud cheers.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), PM Modi said, “Connecting over cricket! A delightful interaction with leading cricket players of Guyana. The sport has brought our nations closer and deepened our cultural linkages.”
