Police shoot, kill man at southeast Las Vegas apartment complex

Date:

LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — Las Vegas police were involved in a shooting Friday morning at a southeast valley apartment complex that left one man dead.

The incident began around 9:10 a.m. when police received reports of a man attempting to open doors and threatening tenants at the Tides apartment complex in the 5100 block of Rawhide Street near Nellis Boulevard and Hacienda Avenue.

“Almost immediately he was uncooperative and using the vehicle as a barrier between him and the officers. After a little bit of discussion with the subject, he walked to the passenger side of the vehicle and retrieved an aluminum baseball bat,” Metro Captain Kurt McKenzie said during a news briefing.

McKenzie said the man turned toward officers with the bat and officers simultaneously used a taser device in an attempt to stop him but it was ineffective.

“Officers did a second, and a third deployment of an ECD (Electric Control Device). Simultaneously an officer discharged his weapon striking the subject,” McKenzie said.

The man died at the scene. No officers were injured. Road closures continue in the area.

This is the 9th officer-involved shooting of 2024. Per LVMPD policy, the identity of the officer involved will be released after 48 hours.
