EDINBORO, Pa. — The IUP women’s basketball program begins PSAC West play in a contest against the Edinboro Fighting Scots on Monday, January 6 at 1:00 p.m.

TIPOFF NOTES 

>> IUP kicks off PSAC West play in their first conference match-up of the new year against Edinboro.

>> Nyshae’ Weaver was named PSAC West Defensive Athlete of the Week on November 25. Weaver added PSAC West Athlete of the Week honors on December 9 after she combined for 20-24 from the field for 44 points and grabbed 29 rebounds against Shepherd and West Chester.

>> The Hawks received votes in the WBCA Division II Coaches Poll and were ranked 17th in the latest D2CSC Media Poll. IUP sits third in the Atlantic Region behind PSAC opponents Seton Hill and Gannon.

>> The Hawks are currently averaging 70.6 PPG, 41.5 RPG, 14.1 APG, 8.8 SPG, and 2.6 BPG. IUP is shooting .452 from the field and .286 beyond the arc.

>> They hold their opponent’s average to 55.2 PPG, .358 from the field, and 16.0 turnovers per game.

>> They notched a season high of 16 steals against Shippensburg, followed by 13 against Goldey-Beacom.

>> The lead scorers for the Hawks are Nyshae’ Weaver and Shamia Strayhorn. Weaver is averaging 15.4 PPG and Strayhorn is averaging 13.7 PPG. Weaver ranks 11th in the PSAC and Strayhorn ranks 18th.

>> Grace Centrulla leads the team with 12 blocks and shoots .447 from the field. Ellie Wilkerson is right behind with 17 steals and seven blocks.

>> The match against Edinboro will mark the 98th time the Crimson Hawks have faced the Fighting Scots. IUP is leading the series by one, holding a record of 49-48 against Edinboro.

>> Edinboro is ranked third in the PSAC West, behind Seton Hill (13-1, 7-0) and IUP (11-1, 6-0). 

 

EDINBORO AT A GLANCE 

Edinboro is in third place in the PSAC West with an overall record of 11-2 and a conference record of 7-0. Their two non-conference losses came from University of Findlay, 74-80, and Wayne State University, 63-71. The Fighting Scots opened up their PSAC West conference play in a contest against Clarion on Friday, January 3rd, defeating the Golden Eagles 70-61. Edinboro is scoring 71.7 PPG, 38.8 RPG, 12.9 APG, 8.8 SPG, and 3.5 BPG. The Fighting Scots are shooting .428 from the field, .268 from the arc, and .789 from the line. Edinboro is above their opponents in all categories except 3PT percentage (.268 vs. .295) and turnovers per game (15.1 vs. 18.8). 

SERIES HISTORY

This will be the 98th game between the Crimson Hawks and the Fighting Scots. IUP has an overall record of 49 wins and 48 losses against Edinboro. Their first match-up took place in January of 1984, and resulted in a win for IUP, 75-73. Their most recent contest took place in February of 2024, which resulted in a win for IUP, 55-53. IUP’s Nyshae’ Weaver had a good game in their most recent game, posting a double-double for the Crimson Hawks with 10 points and 18 rebounds. Grace Centrulla, Macie Jarrett, and Janeira Scott all contributed to the win against Edinboro, scoring a combined eight points with seven rebounds, two blocks, and two assists. 

EDINBORO EXCELLENCE

Edinboro has had a fairly successful history in the past decade under head coach, Callie Wheeler, and former head coach, Stan Swank. Wheeler led the Fighting Scots to the PSAC Tournament twice, and the NCAA Atlantic Regions once. Retired Edinboro coaching legend, Stan Swank, led Edinboro to winning four PSAC Championships, eight PSAC Tournament appearances, six NCAA Atlantic Region Tournament Appearances, and one NCAA Elite eight appearance from the 2010-11 season to the 2017-18 season. 

ALL AROUND WEAVER

Junior forward Weaver currently leads the Hawks in numerous categories and sits in the top rankings in the PSAC. Weaver was also named PSAC West Defensive Athlete of the Week on November 25th and was just named the PSAC West Athlete of the Week on December 9th. 

Weaver ranks 11th in conference scoring, averaging 15.4 PPG. She is second in rebounding, averaging 10.6/G. Weaver is shooting .667 from the field placing her at first place in the PSAC. Weaver has scored double-digits in ten games this season, recording a season high of 26 points against Shepherd. She grabbed 14 defensive rebounds against Lock Haven and totaled 20 rebounds on the night. 

A LOOK INTO STRAYHORN

Senior guard Shamia Strayhorn leads the team in MPG, averaging 31.3 minutes, placing her at 21st in the PSAC. Strayhorn is shooting .413 from the field and has contributed 38 rebounds, 30 assists, 18 steals, and three blocks to the team.

FRESH OFF THE BENCH

IUP has utilized players off the bench throughout this season. Eighth on the team in scoring is Madison Zavasky, who is averaging 4.9 PPG, the third-highest average on the team off the bench. Lily Jordan is another key player off the bench, averaging 23.8 MPG. She is shooting .449 from the field and is averaging 4.9 RPG. Marin Miller has posted eight steals, 22 assists, 3.1 RPG, and shoots .714 from the line.

HOME COURT ADVANTAGE

Since the opening of the KCAC in the 2011-12 season, IUP has had an outstanding home court advantage to go along with a nationally prominent basketball program. 

IUP boasts a 163-28 (.852) record in home games since the venue opened, not losing more than four home games in a single season during that span. At the KCAC, the IUP women have won:

– 7 of 7 games in 2024-2025 (7-0)

-13 of 15 games in 2023-24 (13-2)

-13 of 17 games in 2022-23 & 2021-22 (13-4)
