IUP TIPOFF NOTES
>> IUP wraps up the long week with a match up at Millersville. The Hawks defeated Goldey-Beacom on Sunday and Kutztown on Tuesday. No. 21 Ashland erased IUP’s nine-game winning streak with a 68-54 defeat on Thursday.
>> Nyshae’ Weaver was named PSAC West Defensive Athlete of the Week on November 25. Weaver added PSAC West Athlete of the Week honors on December 9 after she combined for 20-24 from the field for 44 points and grabbed 29 rebounds against Shepherd and West Chester.
>> The Hawks are receiving votes in the WBCA Division II Coaches Poll and were ranked 17th in the D2CSC Media Poll. IUP sits third in the Atlantic Region behind PSAC opponents Seton Hill and Gannon.
>> The Hawks are currently averaging 71.5 PPG, 42.7 RPG, 13.8 APG, 8.7 SPG, and 2.8 BPG. IUP is shooting .460 from the field and .283 beyond the arc.
>> They hold their opponent’s average to 54.1 PPG, .343 from the field, and 15.7 turnovers per game.
>> They notched a season high of 16 steals against Shippensburg, followed by 13 against Goldey-Beacom.
>> The lead scorers for the Hawks are Nyshae’ Weaver and Shamia Strayhorn. Weaver is averaging 15.2 PPG and Strayhorn is averaging 13.6 PPG. Weaver ranks 9th in the PSAC and Strayhorn ranks 20th.
>> Grace Centrulla leads the team with 12 blocks and shoots .468 from the field. Ellie Wilkerson is right behind with 15 steals and five blocks.
>> Millersville leads the PSAC with an 8-3 overall record and 3-1 in the PSAC.
MILLERSVILLE AT A GLANCE
Millersville leads the PSAC East with an 8-3 overall record and a 3-1 record in the PSAC. They recently just lost to Clarion on Tuesday, 61-53, despite both teams shooting .310 from the field. They are averaging 67.3 PPG, 41.9 RPG, 12.5 APG, and are shooting .420 from the field, .293 beyond the arc, posting 8.8 steals per game, and 4.7 blocks per game. Their lead scorer is Kali March who is averaging 12.9 PPG, 2.5 RPG, 4.0 APG, and has came away with 20 steals. Brenna Ortwein leads the team with 25 steals, pulling away with 10 in the past three games and six against Clarion on Tuesday. Morgan Mahoney’s presence at the net is strong as she totals 18 blocks this season, combining for five in the past two games.
SERIES HISTORY
This will be the teams 32nd overall meeting with IUP holding a 21-win advantage. The Hawks are currently on a three-game winning streak against the Marauders, two of which were hosted at Millersville. The Hawks have won six of the past seven meetings. The teams last played in December of 2022, IUP won 80-62. Janeira Scott saw action in this game, she scored three points, grabbed two rebounds, had three assists, and one steal.
COMPARING THE TWO
IUP ranks first in the PSAC in defensive rebound grabs with 30.6 per game. Millersville takes second averaging 29.0 per game. IUP is ranked last in team turnovers (140) and opponent turnovers (157). While Millersville is fifth with 207 and forces their opponent to 203 turnovers, ranking eighth. The teams shoot nearly the same beyond the arc with Millersville shooting .293 and IUP shooting .283. The Hawks lead the PSAC in point margin (17.4) and are second in limiting their opponent to just an average of 54.1 PPG. The Marauders are third, limiting their opponents to 56.5 PPG. They lead the PSAC in blocked shots averaging 4.73 per game and totals 52.
ALL AROUND WEAVER
Junior forward Weaver currently leads the Hawks in numerous categories and sits in the top rankings in the PSAC. Weaver was also named PSAC West Defensive Athlete of the Week on November 25th and was just named the PSAC West Athlete of the Week on December 9th.
Weaver ranks 11th in conference scoring, averaging 15.2 PPG. She is second in rebounding, averaging 10./G. Weaver is shooting .677 from the field placing her at second place in the PSAC. Weaver has scored double-digits in seven games this season, recording a season high of 26 points against Shepherd. She grabbed 14 defensive rebounds against Lock Haven and totaled 20 rebounds on the night.
A LOOK INTO STRAYHORN
Senior guard Shamia Strayhorn leads the team in MPG, averaging 31.1 minutes, placing her at 18th in the PSAC. Strayhorn is shooting .427 from the field and has contributed 32 rebounds, 25 assists, 15 steals, and two blocks to the team.
FRESH OFF THE BENCH
IUP has utilized players off the bench throughout this season. Seventh on the team in scoring is Madison Zavasky, who is averaging 5.4 PPG, the second highest average on the team off the bench. Lily Jordan is another key player off the bench, averaging 23.2 MPG. She is shooting .456 from the field and is averaging 4.8 RPG. Marin Miller has posted eight steals, 16 assists, 3.5 RPG, and shoots .750 from the line.
HOME COURT ADVANTAGE
Since the opening of the KCAC in the 2011-12 season, IUP has had an outstanding home-court advantage to go along with a nationally prominent basketball program. IUP boasts a 163-28 (.852) record in home games since the venue opened, not losing more than four home games in a single season during that span. At the KCAC, the IUP women have won:
