Purdue basketball big man out vs. Toledo on Saturday, maybe longer

Date:

Purdue basketball will play its final nonconference game Sunday against Toledo without one of its backup big men.

Will Berg suffered an ankle injury in practice this past week, Boilermakers coach Matt Painter told reporters Saturday. It will cause the third-year center to miss Sunday’s game, and he will be day-to-day moving forward.

Berg has played in 10 of 12 games, with three starts. He averages 2.6 points and 2.0 rebounds in 9.3 minutes.

The absence, however, temporary, further thins out the frontcourt depth. Purdue lost freshman center Daniel Jacobsen for the season to a broken tibia suffered in the second game of the season.

For Saturday — and perhaps the near future — Purdue will rely more on senior Caleb Furst and freshman Raleigh Burgess for minutes behind starting center Trey Kaufman-Renn.
