‘Quite a prickly character’ – Ricky Ponting surprised by India coach Gautam Gambhir’s reaction to his Virat Kohli comment | Sporting News India

Date:

A few days before the Border-Gavaskar Trophy series between India and Australia, tensions are already brewing off the field. Former Australian captain Ricky Ponting and current India head coach Gautam Gambhir seem to be at odds after a recent exchange of comments about Indian cricket stars Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma.

It all began when Ponting, in an interview, questioned Kohli’s recent form and suggested the need for improvement. Gambhir did not appreciate Ponting’s remarks and suggested that the Australian legend should focus on his own team.

In response, Ponting seemed surprised by Gambhir’s reaction, calling him a “prickly character” for his sharp reply. Ponting also clarified that his comments were not intended as an insult to Kohli, but rather an observation about his recent form.

What did Ricky Ponting say about Virat Kohli?

During an interview with 7News, Ponting expressed his thoughts on Kohli’s recent form in Test cricket. He said that Kohli had only scored two Test hundreds in the past five years, a statistic that surprised him.

“I saw a stat the other day about Virat. It said he’s only scored two Test hundreds in the last five years… that’s a concern,” Ponting commented. He added that, normally, such a record would be unusual for a top-order international batsman.

Ponting, however, was quick to clarify that his statement was not meant to undermine Kohli’s abilities. He highlighted Kohli’s success in Australia, saying, “In no way was it a dig at him (Kohli)… he’s a class player and he’s played well in Australia in the past.”

How did Gautam Gambhir respond to Ricky Ponting’s comments on Virat Kohli?

Gambhir was asked about Ponting’s comments during a press conference on Monday, where he responded strongly. Rather than addressing the concerns Ponting raised about Kohli, Gambhir questioned why Ponting was even discussing Indian cricket.

“What does Ponting have to do with Indian cricket?” he said. “He should think about Australian cricket.”

Gambhir defended Kohli and Rohit, calling them “incredibly tough men” who have contributed a lot to Indian cricket and will continue to do so. Gambhir’s remarks were a clear sign that he did not welcome Ponting’s observations on Kohli and Rohit.

How did Ricky Ponting react to Gautam Gambhir’s response?

Upon hearing Gambhir’s reaction, Ponting seemed surprised but said that Gambhir’s response was typical of his character. While speaking to 7News, the former Australian skipper said:

“I was surprised to read the reaction, but knowing the coach, Gautam Gambhir… he’s quite a prickly character.”

Ponting didn’t seem too taken aback by the response, as he acknowledged that Gambhir is known for being direct and outspoken. He also reiterated his belief that Kohli would likely perform well in Australia, despite recent struggles.

“He’ll be keen to bounce back over here… it’s amazing how little things can get cut up, but he’s a class player,” Ponting added, showing confidence in Kohli’s ability to regain his form.
