The first game of the Rose Bowl has been abandoned
Sadly, this was a predictable outcome.
The weather has not relented in Wellington and the first match of the Rose Bowl series has been abandoned.
The next inspection is due now, but it is still raining
New Zealand broadcaster TVNZ is showing highlights of a White Ferns and England game.
Meanwhile, rain continues to fall in Wellington.
Does the MCG need a roof?
Someone get a roof over the MCG in the next 6 days.
– Chris
G’day Chris.
Does it ever rain in Melbourne?
Of course, I say that in jest.
We may need a roof over the Basin Reserve in Wellington.
There appears to be rain around for Game II on Saturday.
However, Monday’s Game III will hopefully be clear.
Groundhog day
Groundhog Day from the mens test…
– Natty
Fun fact.
Groundhog day is in my top five favourite movies.
Cracking film. Always loved it.
What I don’t love is rain ruining cricket — but that is what we have today.
Where is Jess Jonassen?
While we have a rain delay.
What has Jess Jonassen done wrong? She has been a leading bowler for years but as soon as Sophie Molineux was fit Jess got chopped from the Australian team (and even squads). And when Sophie was ruled out of this tour I would have thought Jess would come back into the squad as a like-for-like replacement. But no.
– NeilA
G’day Neil.
I do not have an answer for you mate.
What I think this does show is the depth that Australia is spoiled with.
Jess Jonassen probably is a starter for any other nation.
What is drainage like at the Basin Reserve?
Whats the drainage like?
– Steve
G’day Steve.
I don’t have any personal experience. I have not been to the Basin Reserve. It is on the bucket list. Such a beautiful cricket ground.
At the risk of stereotyping New Zealand, I would assume their grounds are good with drainage, considering rain is a little more regular at the Land of the Long White Cloud.
NZ coach says his women cannot relent if an opportunity comes up
New Zealand women’s cricket coach Ben Sawyer has been speaking with broadcaster TVNZ as rain continues to fall in Wellington.
He has recently signed a contract extension after guiding the White Ferns to the T20 World Cup crown.
Now in the Rose Bowl, which New Zealand has not won since 1999, he expects a very tough battle with Australia.
“They’re a really strong team. Even against India, at times they were three or four down for 70 or 80, but you’ve got the likes of Ash Garnder of Georgia Wareham walk in [to bat],” he said.
“Even if you do have them four or five out, you have to keep going.
“You can’t rest at any stage, they’re just going to keep coming at you.”
Next update from Wellington will be in 90 minutes
Not great news.
We have word from Wellington that the next update will not be until 1:30pm local time.
That is 90 minutes from now.
Rain is still falling in the New Zealand capital.
No word on if, or when, play will start in Wellington
Do we have any
estimated time of start of play.?– Uncle Pete
Oh Pete. I wish brother.
We are waiting for the rain to cease. Then the groundstaff would need to ensure the field was fine to play on.
I expect we have a fair bit of waiting.
But when we have any confirmation, you will find it here on the ABC Sport live blog.
Why rain? Why?
Why have the weather gods decided to spoil my last week of work cricket viewing with all this rain! Hopefully we get a conclusion here today.
– Matt V
Good morning Matt.
This weather really is not in the festive cricket spirit.
Ironically, like Brisbane, Wellington is magnificent on a beautiful day.
When it rains? Well, it’s just another wet city I suppose.
Let’s hope we get some cricket today.
The coin toss has offically been delayed
This will not come as much of a surprise, but the coin toss has been delayed.
Covers are on in Wellington
Is this Brisbane or Wellington?
There is plenty of rain in New Zealand’s capital today.
And it is raining now.
Will we get any cricket today? We certainly hope so.
But what is certain, we will not be starting at 9am AEDT.
What is the Rose Bowl Series?
The Rose Bowl is an ODI series contested in women’s cricket between Australia and New Zealand.
It began in 1985 and Australia has won the lion-share of Rose Bowls.
New Zealand last won a Rose Bowl series in 1999.
Australia won the series in 2000 and have held the trophy since.
The selection headache Australia loves to have
Georgia Voll’s first ODI century in her debut series illustrates depth is not a problem for Australia as it edges closer to defending its World Cup title in India next year.

Will Alyssa Healy play?
— with AAP
Australia’s captain has missed a bit of cricet recently with injury.
She missed most of the WBBL and did not participate in the ODI series against India.
Tahlia McGrath stood in as captain, but there was belief Healy would suit up in the Rose Bowl.
If she does, she will not be taking the gloves as wicketkeeper.
“I won’t be wicketkeeping this series … but there’s not a lot of cricket leading into the Ashes, so for me, it’s an opportunity to try and get back on the park, as a batter, and try and find some runs more importantly,” Healy told reporters on Wednesday.
“I feel like I’ve hardly played any cricket for the last eight or nine months and there’s a good opportunity to do that.
“The knee’s tracking well, it’s just a day-by-day thing, and we’ll just assess as we go.”
Welcome to the ABC Sport live blog of the Rose Bowl
Good morning Australia.
The women’s take centre stage for a three-match ODI series as Australia and New Zealand play for the Rose Bowl.
The Aussies are coming off a 3-0 series win at home over India.
But the Kiwis have a recent white ball triumph, winning the T20 World Cup earlier this year.
Today is the first of three matches, all at the Basin Reserve in the New Zealand capital, Wellington.
