Report: Man Utd contact ‘leading’ Man City manager target

Manchester United are reported to have made contact with Sporting CP manager Ruben Amorim amid the ongoing uncertainty surrounding Erik ten Hag’s future at Old Trafford.

Ten Hag survived a review of his position during the October international break and eased the pressure on his shoulders with Saturday’s 2-1 victory over Brentford, but doubts remain over his long-term future.

While a change in the Old Trafford dugout may not be imminent, United appear to be exploring their options as Sky Sports Germany state contact has been made with Amorim.

United are said to have a significant interest in the 39-year-old and enquiries have been made about his availability. While the faith in Ten Hag still remains, United “want to be prepared” for a possible coaching change.

Some of United’s urgency may stem from the fact that cross-town rivals Manchester City are believed to be incredibly keen on Amorim. The Guardian state the Sporting CP boss could be the “leading” candidate to replace Pep Guardiola if he departs at the end of the season.

City recently confirmed that current Sporting director Hugo Viana will join as a replacement for the departing Txiki Begiristain, but Amorim has stressed that there is no guarantee he will reunite with his old running buddy at the Etihad Stadium next season.

“Viana will always be a great friend, but one day his professional trajectory will be different,” Amorim vowed.

“One thing does not lead to another. The main focus is that nothing has changed at Sporting. Viana will only leave at the end of the season. Until then, he is the sports director, there are no changes in this aspect.

“We didn’t talk about it at all. They are two completely different paths. People made that connection, but Hugo Viana’s path is Hugo Viana’s path, my path is my path. We have a professional relationship, it won’t last forever, what will remain is our friendly relationship, that’s for sure.”
