Revealed – Why Ex Man United Star Set To Drop To The Bench In Lazio Vs Inter Milan Serie A Clash

Versatile Inter Milan defender Matteo Darmian is set to drop to the bench in Monday’s Serie A match against Lazio.

This according to Italian broadcaster Sky Sport Italia, via FCInterNews. They report that Nerazzurri coach wants to keep him in reserve on the bench as a substitute.

Inter coach Simone Inzaghi is dealing with something of an injury crisis in defense.

The Nerazzurri are without defenders Francesco Acerbi and Benjamin Pavard. Both are currently on the sidelines with thigh injuries.

Therefore, Inzaghi’s hand is quite forced in terms of selecting his back three.

The Nerazzurri coach will go with a defense of Yann Bisseck, Stefan de Vrij, and Alessandro Bastoni against Lazio on Sunday. That is the same back three that started in the Champions League against Bayer Leverkusen.

Matteo Darmian To Be On The Bench For Inter Vs Lazio

Meanwhile, Sky reports, Inzaghi will go with Federico Dimarco and Denzel Dumfries at wingback.

The Nerazzurri will leave the likes of Carlos Augusto and Matteo Darmian on the bench.

That is the pair that started at wingback against Leverkusen on Tuesday.

However, both Augusto and Darmian are also capable of playing in the back three.

Therefore, Inzaghi wants to have the versatile Darmian available as a substitute. He can play in virtually any position in the back three.

Therefore, if the Inter coach needs to make a substitution during the match – whether for tactical reasons or due to injury – he will have Darmian ready to fill a number of roles.
