UNC basketball will head to Memphis for a preseason charity exhibition game on Oct. 15 (6 p.m., ESPNU) at FedEx Forum.

The Tar Heels and Tigers will play as part of a doubleheader dubbed the Hoops for St. Jude Tip Off Classic, with the reigning national champion South Carolina women playing Memphis at 8:30 in the second exhibition game.

The four-team event is being played in support of St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. Tickets will go on sale to the general public at 10 a.m. Saturday.

Neither game will count toward any team’s regular season records. NCAA rules allow Division I teams to play charity exhibition games against a Division I opponent. Duke vs. Arizona State is among the other marquee matchups scheduled for October.

UNC and Memphis could meet again Thanksgiving week at the Maui Invitational in Hawaii. The eight-team event is scheduled for Nov. 25-27, with the Heels and Tigers on opposite sides of the bracket.

Hubert Davis’ team is coming off an ACC regular-season championship and Sweet 16 appearance in the NCAA Tournament. Fifth-year guard RJ Davis, the reigning ACC Player of the Year, and sophomore guard Elliot Cadeau are among UNC’s top returners.

Penny Hardaway’s squad has endured a wave of change throughout the offseason, including the dismissal of four coaches last week. Former Duke guard Nolan Smith is reportedly set to join Hardaway as an assistant coach. Memphis is replacing its top six scorers from a team that made the NCAA Tournament last season.
