Rohit Sharma to retire from Test cricket after Sydney Test: Reports | India tour of Australia, 2024/25

Date:

According to the report, Rohit might ask for an extension to play in the World Test Championships final if India make the cut

According to a report on the Times of India (TOI), Indian Test skipper Rohit Sharma will call time from Test cricket after the New Year’s Test in Sydney, starting on January 3. India are currently behind Australia 1-2 in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy and will have a chance to level the series in Sydney.

Rohit, who led India to the T20 World Cup title in June earlier this year, has been going through a lean patch in the longest format of the game. After India lost the Test series to New Zealand 3-0 at home in October and November, all eyes were on the BGT. However, after winning the first Test in Perth under Jasprit Bumrah’s captaincy, India have lost two out of the next three Tests.

Rohit’s form as a batter is at an all-time low as well. He has amassed just 31 runs at an average of 6.20, with a highest score of 10. He batted at No.6 for two games, and when it didn’t work for him, he promoted himself back to the opening slot, thus relegating an in-form KL Rahul to No.3. But the move didn’t reap dividends for them.

According to the report, Rohit might ask for an extension to play in the World Test Championships final if India make the cut. Or else, the New Year’s Test in Sydney will be his final appearance in the format.

India don’t have any Test assignments till July, when the away Test series against England will begin.
