Serie A icon Francesco Totti hung up his boots in 2017 but he has now revealed that he has been called by clubs to come out of retirement to play for him.
Totti played 786 games for the Giallorossi has was arguably the greatest player in the club’s history, winning the Serie A once, the Coppa Italia twice and he also famously won the World Cup with Italy in the summer of 2006.
He recently spoke to the press at an event organised by Betsson and he revealed that he could still function in the Serie A as a player, also stating that he was called by Serie A clubs to come out of retirement.
He said, via La Gazzetta dello Sport: “There were Serie A teams that called me. I admit that they made me think a little, a little crazy. It would be difficult, but in life you never say never. There are players who have played many years after the end of their career. It also depends on where you play, with all due respect, but if I were to return to Serie A I would have to train really well”.”
That is quite certainly a bold claim from someone who has retired a while back and is over 45. He also went on to state that if Lazio came calling for him, he wouldn’t even consider playing for them.
He also said that he is anyway playing with his local side and he would take only two or three months to be ready for Serie A football.
“If I had to do something crazy, I’d do it in Italy, not abroad, but it’s crazy. Maybe Inter will call me… Let’s make a dressing room, I’ll bring the Chinese. When you turn the page you never know what awaits you. It wasn’t my choice, but in that moment it has to be experienced differently from the context. Maybe that’s also why I’ve had that thing inside me. It’s true that there’s a beginning and an end to everything. I didn’t want it and so that window remained open. A 10 in Italy? There isn’t one, he could come back.”
