Back when Alonzo Mourning was at Georgetown, an announcer – maybe Dick Vitale – said that John Thompson would pass by him and whisper “Mutombo…Mutombo….”
He had no idea what that was about.
Dikembe Mutombo had come to Georgetown to go to medical school, but Thompson persuaded him to join the team and he went on to become a Hall of Fame player after an 18-year NBA career.
His finger wagging after blocking a shot became legendary.
Sadly, Mutombo has passed away from brain cancer. He was just 58.
He was a tremendous basketball player and did a lot of to help people back in his native Congo and across Africa and beyond. He’ll be missed.
