Sarnia Sting Fined For Exceeding Fighting Majors In A Game

Date:

On Thursday, the OHL informed that the Sarnia Sting organization has been fined $500 as a result of events in a game on Oct. 23 against the Flint Firebirds.

In the game against their West Division opponents, the Sting surpassed the league’s threshold for allowable fighting majors in a single game of three. They had a total of four fighting majors during the game.

Two of the Sting’s fighting majors were assessed with instigator penalties, leading to only three of the Flint Firebirds’ five fighting majors counting against the league’s single-game limit.

Offending teams are fined a total of $500 for each fighting major that surpasses the allowable number of three fighting majors assessed to their team in a single game.

Originally, Sarnia was fined $1,000 for five fighting majors in the game. However, upon further review of the events, the OHL ruled that Sting defenseman Mitch Young was instigated in his fight in the second period, and his fighting major does not count against Sarnia’s overall total for the game.

Junior hockey games often escalate into chaotic scenes when players begin to lose their composure, resulting in a flurry of penalties and intense confrontations.

To address this issue, the OHL has implemented a rule aimed at curbing the unruly behavior that can spiral out of control. This measure not only helps maintain order on the ice, assisting the referees, but also holds teams accountable for their players’ actions, setting a standard for sportsmanship and discipline.
