TOPEKA — Regional golf tournaments were held on Monday. High school players across the state teed it up with hopes of qualifying for next week’s state tournament.
The top three teams from each regional qualified for the state championship. The top five players from a non-qualified team earned a spot in the state championship, too.
Regardless of classification, the state tournament will be a two-day event with round one set for Monday. Round two and the final round of the state tournament will be on Tuesday.
Here are the Shawnee County players who will be playing in the final tournament of the season:
Class 6A
Washburn Rural secured their spot in the state championship after they took second place in regionals. The Junior Blues hosted the regional at Cypress Ridge on Monday. They finished with a team-score of 329 which was 14 shots off of first place Manhattan.
Manhattan took first and second place with Maddie Myers and Lainey Ball leading the team. The top Washburn Rural player was Natalie Peterson with a 77. She took third place as she was three shots off of first place. Reece Randall fired a 78 which was good enough for fourth place. Lauren Cox took eighth place and Kailyn Petersen took 10th place. Washburn Rural’s team was rounded out by Colbey Stead in 11th place and Ella Taggart in 17th.
Topeka High was unable to qualify for this year’s state tournament.
Washburn Rural will compete in the final tournament of the season. The Class 6A State Tournament will be played at Carey Park Golf Course in Hutchinson.

Class 5A
Topeka West hosted the Class 5A regional at Cypress Ridge on Monday. Seaman won the regional title with a score of 375 which was 19 strokes better than the field. The Vikings were led by Makenna Stuke.
The junior took second place in the individual standings. Stuke shot a round of 90 and she was one shot off of De Soto’s Mckenzie Laster for the title. The Vikings took four of the top five positions on the leaderboard. Jaycee Zimmerman earned third place with Kaitlynn Frye and Chloe Schmidtlein taking fourth and fifth place. Molina Quintana and Anna McLaughlin tied with a round of 108 for 12th place.
Topeka West qualified two individual players for the state tournament. Alex Baxter tied for seventh place overall with a 101. Berlyn Kolean will join Baxter after she finished in 19th place.
Shawnee Heights will send two players to the state tournament, too. Lyla Blair tied for seventh place with a 101 while Lauryn Valdivia took 12th place.
Salina Municipal Golf Course will be the host of this year’s Class 5A State Tournament.

Class 4A
Hayden punched their tickets for the state tournament with a great performance in the Class 4A McPherson regional. The Wildcats tied with the host team with a team-score of 324. Hayden earned the tie-breaker and they won the regional title.
Addyson Baer led the team with a fifth place finish with a score of 79. Lauren Jorjon, Izzy Glotzbach and Brooke Johnson finished seventh, eighth and ninth place in Monday’s tournament. Borjon fired an 81 with Glotzbach one stroke behind. Johnson ended the day with a round of 84. Nora Allphin took 19th place and Kellyn Specht earned 39th.
Hayden will head to the Class 4A State Tournament next week with it being played at Hesston Golf Course.
High school football: These are the top Topeka-area performances from Week 6
Class 3A-1A
The defending Class 3-1A State Champions return to the final tournament of the season after winning regionals on Monday. Silver Lake won the Osage City regional with a final score of 356. They won by 38 strokes over second-place Jefferson West. Osage City finished in third place in the team standings.
Silver Lake went 1-2-3 in the final individual standings. Taylor Zordel won the title with a nine-over round. Kailyn Hanni took second place as she was one stroke behind Zordel. Hope Thornton earned third place. Savannah Wende, Makennaa Miller and Alyssa Streit were also on Silver Lake’s winning team.
Rossville finished in fourth place as a team, but two players were able to qualify for the state tournament. Elley Sanders took fourth place in the regional with a round of 93. Brinley Pottorf will also play in the state tournament after shooting a 104.
The Class 3-1A State Championship will be played at Emporia Municipal Golf Course.
