Several Former Red Wings Hit Waivers

Date:

The waiver wire has been busy lately.

And a few former Detroit Red Wings have been heading to the AHL.

The first was promising forward Andreas Athanasiou. He is in his third season with the Chicago Blackhawks but has struggled recently.

His ice time has declined from season to season. Two years ago, he played 16 minutes a game, 13:06 last year, and 9:36 this year. That’s nearly a 50 percent drop-off spread out over three seasons.

Two years ago, it appeared as though he was having a resurgence. He scored 40 points in 81 games, the second-best offensive year of his career.

One day later, James Reimer was put on waivers. The 36-year-old signed a one-year contract with the Buffalo Sabres on July 2nd. The $1 million deal was an easy-low risk addition for the team.

However, the play of Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen and Devon Levi pushed Reimer out of the crease and onto the waiver wire in early October. The Anaheim Ducks then picked him up and played him for two games before putting him on waivers yesterday.

In those games, he allowed nine goals on 66 shots, which gives him a .864 save percentage on the season and a 4.50 goals against average.

Hockey fans across North America will find out soon what the fate of these two players will be. For Athanasiou, he reported to the Blackhawks AHL team and played last night.
