MUSKEGON, MI – The Muskegon Big Reds boys basketball program hosted its annual Muskegon Basketball Showcase event on Saturday with a trio of noteworthy matchups for sports fans to enjoy.
The Big Reds closed out the event with an impressive 69-33 win over Ferndale, while Lansing Waverly rolled past Harper Woods Chandler Park for an 81-46 win and Detroit Martin Luther King knocked off Kalamazoo Central 48-38 in a battle of undefeated teams.
There were several other local games on the schedule this weekend that included Muskegon-area boys and girls basketball teams as well.
Below is a look at how all the local teams performed on Saturday, Jan. 4, 2025.

BOYS
—
Muskegon 69, Ferndale 33
The Big Reds jumped out to a 34-11 lead in the first half and continued to pull away from the Eagles down the stretch as they picked up an impressive non-conference win Saturday night in the final game of the Muskegon Basketball Showcase.
James Martin scored a game-high 18 points to lead Muskegon, while Elija Langston added 16 points, Darryl Thompkins Jr. added 10 points, Danelle Lawrence had nine points and Aquez Petty had five points.
Drakkar Ouwinga led Ferndale with nine points, while Eden Vinyard and Toriano Adams each added six points.
Muskegon (6-0) will host Hudsonville (6-1) on Tuesday followed by a road trip to Byron Center (7-2) next Friday.

Traverse City West 68, Reeths-Puffer 63
The Rockets used a strong second-quarter effort to take a 38-27 lead into halftime but couldn’t fend off the Titans down the stretch, falling short in a hard-fought non-conference loss on Saturday.
Brayden Mitchelson finished with 27 points and seven rebounds to pace Reeths-Puffer, while Marvin Moore added 21 points and four assists, Drew Brooks had six rebounds and five assists and Elliot Schneider had six rebounds.
Caden Stoops scored 21 points to lead Traverse City West.
Reeths-Puffer (2-5) will host Whitehall (7-2) on Tuesday, followed by a road trip to Mona Shores (1-7) next Friday.

Grant 76, Shelby 34
Zaiden Phillips finished with 21 points to lead Grant, while Sincere Hatch added 18 points and Ethan DeLong had 11 points.
“I was most pleased with our defense tonight,” said Grand head coach Dan George. “These guys are very unselfish. They have bigger goals. We strive to get better than we were yesterday. I think we did that tonight.”
Grant (7-0) will host Reed City (1-8) next Friday, while Shelby (2-7) will host Oakridge (5-4) on Tuesday.

Coopersville 66, Kent City 41

GIRLS
—
Kent City 47, Sparta 9
Ellie Hansen led the Eagles with 13 points and two assists, while Kenzy Freeland added 11 points, three assists, and three steals. Laynee Hoffman had seven points, three rebounds, three assists, and three steals. Hailey Kamphuis had seven points and three rebounds, and Brooklynn Harding grabbed six rebounds.
Kent City (6-2) will travel to White Cloud (1-5) next Friday.
