Smalling joins Saudi side Al-Fayha

Date:

Roma defender Chris Smalling has joined Saudi Pro League club Al-Fayha on a two-year deal.

The 34-year-old former England centre-back played 155 times for Roma, scoring 10 goals, following his 2019 move from Manchester United.

He played just 12 times last season because of injury and did not feature this campaign, although he was an unused substitute in Sunday’s game with Juventus.

Neither side have confirmed if a fee was involved.

Smalling was part of the side that won the 2022 Europa Conference League final by beating Feyenoord and also played in the Europa League final defeat against Sevilla the following season.

He had been part of two Premier League title-winning squads at Old Trafford and won 31 England caps, his last coming in 2017.

He previously played for Maidstone and Fulham.

Monday was the Saudi League’s transfer deadline day and other late deals included former Tottenham forward Steven Bergwijn joining Al-Ittihad from Ajax for £17.7m and Portuguese midfielder Danilo Pereira leaving Paris St-Germain for the same club.
