Light snow across central Indiana before dusk has caused traffic crashes that have snarled traffic across Indianapolis. The National Service Indianapolis warned drivers ahead of afternoon commutes that roads would be slick and cautioned drivers to leave plenty of space between cars.
“Don’t be fooled by the light snow,” National Weather Service Indianapolis warns. The cold roads quickly became a slippery mess and officials warned drivers to allow extra time to get home Monday evening.
That cautionary tale was spot on as people are finding going just a few miles is taking nearly an hour, even on neighborhood streets.
Even before the height of the evening commute, Indianapolis Metropolitan Police and Indianapolis Emergency Medical Services had reported to more than 100 calls related to vehicle crashes and cars sliding off the road due to slick conditions. At least one crash involved a pedestrian, police said.
At least four separate crashes caused traffic jams on the I-465 and I-65 interchange. Multiple lanes were closed in both westbound and northbound directions near the interchange.
Freezing cold is here. Where to stay warm and find overnight shelter in Indianapolis.
