Somerset steals dramatic late victory against Surrey after wild seven-wicket collapse

Date:

Somerset has taken seven wickets in the final hour of their County Championship match against Surrey to clinch a remarkable 111-run victory in Taunton.

Chasing 221 for victory, reigning champions Surrey were bowled out for 109 in 78 overs, with the last wicket falling less than five minutes before the end of play at Cooper Associates County Ground.

Somerset spinners Archie Vaughan and Jack Leach claimed five wickets each as Surrey lost 7-14 in a dramatic 18-over passage of play, where Surrey desperately tried to wind down the clock and bat out a draw.

Surrey tailender Dan Worrall was the last man to fall, trapped on the pads by Leach for a second-ball duck to spark wild scenes at the Taunton venue.

“To get a win with only a couple of minutes left in the match was very special,” Somerset captain Lewis Gregory said.

“Four-day wins are some of the most pleasing you have as a cricketer because you work so hard for them.”

Vaughan, son of former England captain Michael, claimed 5-38 in the fourth innings, finishing with match figures of 11-140.

The 18-year-old, playing just his second first-class match, accounted for Bangladesh veteran Shakib Al Hasan and England all-round Tom Curran during his probing 32-over spell, which included 15 maidens.

“Archie has taken to first-class cricket like a duck to water,” Gregory continued.

“The fact that he is more of a batter than a bowler is the really exciting bit and we believe he is going to be very good to watch with the bat over a number of years. If you throw in the off-spin he has bowled in this game, there is a mighty special cricketer developing.”

Leach, dropped from England’s Test side earlier this year, finished with figures of 5-37 from 37 overs with 24 maidens.

Earlier, the injured Tom Banton combined with Somerset tailender Craig Overton for a crucial 71-run partnership for the tenth wicket, steering the hosts towards 224.

First-innings centurion Banton, who damaged his foot before play on day three, scored 46 in 65 balls with limited movement at the crease, at one stage reverse sweeping Al Hasan for a boundary.

Surrey captain Rory Burns and opening partner Dom Sibley survived 21 overs unscathed before Vaughan struck twice in one over. However, a draw seemed inevitable when Sibley and wicketkeeper Ben Foakes formed a 49-run partnership for the fourth wicket, soaking up a further 29 overs at the crease.

Sibley reached fifty in 165 deliveries before Foakes’ departure in the 60th over, caught at first slip off Leach’s bowling, prompted a frantic collapse that featured four ducks.

Donning crutches and a moon boot, Banton hobbled out to join his teammates for the celebrations.

Somerset, who has never won the County Championship, secured 21 points from the match, closing the gap to ladder leaders Surrey to just eight points.

They will next face Lancashire at Old Trafford from Tuesday.
