Sporting’s Ruben Amorim succeeds Ten Hag at Manchester United

Manchester United have confirmed that Ruben Amorim will become the Old Trafford club’s new manager. The 39-year-old Portuguese succeeds Erik ten Hag, who was recently dismissed after a sustained period of poor and inconsistent results.

The Sporting boss will begin his tenure at United on the 11th of November and has signed a contract until mid-2027 with an option for another season. His previous Lisbon-based club will receive €11 million for the coach’s transfer, the Portuguese champions confirmed.

United are in the bottom half of the Premier League in 14th place and have scored just eight goals so far this season. Since Sir Alex Ferguson retired in 2013, no manager has managed to seriously compete for the league title, and it his hoped that Amorim’s attacking style of play can turn the club’s fortunes around.

Ten Hag also failed in that, although the former Ajax and Twente manager did win the League Cup (2023) and FA Cup (2024) with the Mancunians.

Amorim arrives after the club’s brief time under Ruud van Nistelrooy. The Red Devils defeated Leicester City in the round of 16 of the League Cup tournament and look to snowball their rebounding form.
