St. Matthews plane crash: 3 hospitalized following small plane crash

Date:

Crews from the St. Matthews Police and Fire departments are investigating a small plane that crashed near Baptist Health Hospital East on Friday evening.

A MetroSafe spokesperson said the crash at the intersection of Kresge Way and Breckenridge Lane was initially reported around 6:18 p.m.

Rick Tonini, St. Matthews Fire public information officer, said the plane carrying two passengers crashed into a vehicle also carrying two passengers.

Tonini said witnesses saw the plane begin to straighten out near the roadway while seemingly searching for a place to land.

“As it came through this intersection, it tore out the entire electrical light infrastructure,” he said.

An outage map for LG&E showed there less than five customers are currently without power in the area of the crash as of 8 p.m.

Three of the people involved were transported to area hospitals in unknown conditions — one to Baptist East and two others to UofL Hospital in downtown Louisville.

In a statement, Darrell Watson, senior vice president and chief experience officer of the Louisville Regional Airport Authority, said the Piper PA 28 aircraft was originally approaching to land at Bowman Field.

“The Louisville Regional Airport Authority, which owns and operates Bowman Field, is working with local authorities to support the response of this incident as needed,” he said.

Drivers were asked to avoid the area as the investigation continues.

This is a breaking news story and will update.
