AKRON — In her first golf state tournament experience, St. Peter’s freshman Chaeyeon (Joy) Kim showed a ton of growth.
She finished the Division II state tournament in 13th overall with a 36-hole score of 164. She wrapped up her second round on Monday at Firestone Country Club with an 8-over-par 78.
A PURE JOY: Her game does the talking: St. Peter’s Kim living golf dream as school’s first state qualifier
On Sunday, Kim found herself in 18th place after the first day. She shot a 16-over-par 86 in her first round. The Back 9 was a challenge for Kim as she shot a 46 with one par, five bogeys and three double bogeys, but she played the Front 9 like a champ shooting a 5-over 40 with five bogeys and four pars.
On Monday, she showed a ton of growth in a short span attacking the Back 9 and redeeming herself with a 2-over-par 37 for a huge nine-stroke swing from the first round. She had just two bogeys and the rest were pars as she started on the back. She made the turn to the front and shot a 6-over 41 with four bogeys, a double bogey and four pars.
She finished 24-over-par for her two-day total which was good for the 13th-best individual score in all of Division II girls state tournament golf. She was just three strokes away from a Top 10 spot which would have nabbed her All-Ohio honors.
With three more years of high school golf, Kim will have a chance to be right back in contention aiming for an All-Ohio honor.
