Stanley Recalls 2.6 Million Travel Mugs Due to Burning Hazard

Date:

  • Stanley issued a voluntary recall of two travel mug models that affects over 2 million products.

  • The bottles feature a defective lid that poses a burn hazard.

  • See below for a list of affected products.

On Thursday, Stanley announced its voluntary recall of 2.6 million travel mugs due to a lid malfunction. According to the recall shared by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, the threads on the lids of Switchback and Trigger Action mugs “can shrink when exposed to heat and torque, causing the lid to detach during use, posing a burn hazard.”

The recall comes after Stanley received 91 reports of the lids detaching during use worldwide, including 16 in the United States. So far, 38 burn injuries have been reported, two of which took place in the U.S. And, 11 incidents worldwide required medical attention.

The recall applies to the 12- and 16-ounce sizes of the Switchback mugs and the 12-,16- and 20-ounce sizes of the Trigger Action mugs. The cups were double-walled mugs and came in a variety of colors including white, black, and green. The drinkware was sold at Amazon, Walmart, Dick’s Sporting Goods, Target, and other retail stores from June 2016 through December 2024.

In a statement announcing the recall, Stanley asked all customers “currently in possession of the Switchback or Trigger Action travel mugs to immediately stop use of these products.” The brand is also offering a replacement lid to those affected, all they have to do is verify their model using the interactive checker at bottom of the recall. The forum requests entry of the mug’s identification number (which can be found on the base) and the retail store where it was purchased.

Below are the identification numbers affected:

  • Switchback, 12 ounces: 20-01437

  • Switchback, 16 ounces: 20-01436, 20-02211

  • Trigger Action, 12 ounces: 20-02033, 20-02779, 20-02825
