State champs! Fairview wins first PIAA girls golf championship in school history

Date:

STATE COLLEGE – After finishing in second place last fall and the entire team coming back, Fairview girls golf was determined to win a state championship.

Fairview accomplished the historic goal in dominant fashion on Wednesday as the Tigers beat the field by 20 strokes for the PIAA Class 2A title at Penn State University.

It’s the first state title for Fairview girls golf and the fifth in a row by District 10 in Class 2A girls golf. Hickory won the past three 2A titles after North East won in 2020.

Fairview finished with a combined score of 234, which is 18 above par, while Tunkhannock was second at 254 and three-time defending state champion Hickory was third at 257.

Cora Hirz, who could rejoin the volleyball team for the District 10 quarterfinals on Thursday, led the Tigers with a round of 76 including four birdies on the front nine, while Moira Erharrtic shot a 77 and Meredith Thompson had an 81. The top three rounds are the only ones to count, but Abby Benz and Izzy Benz also competed for Fairview with rounds of 83 and 88, respectively.

Cathedral Prep finshes second

The Cathedral Prep boys golf team came heartbreakingly close to a state championship as the Ramblers finished second just nine strokes behind Scranton Prep in Class 2A.

Scranton Prep shot a 96 and Prep had a 305 between their top four golfers. Connor Laird shot a 71, including three birdies and one eagle for the Ramblers, while Cooper Wierzchowski had a 74, Santino Washburn shot a 79 and Joseph Prichard shot an 81.

The Saegertown boys and McDowell girls finished in eighth place in their respective classes.
