Sturgis tennis ends season in regional round

VICKSBURG — The Sturgis tennis season came to a close earlier this week at the regional tournament.

Vicksburg was the host for this year’s regional, which saw Gull Lake take first place with 26 points. Stevensville-Lakeshore was second with 22 points and St. Joseph finished third with 21. Sturgis came in sixth position this year with five points.

George Ebert had the longest run of the day for the Trojans. He was seeded third in the first singles flight and had a bye in the first round. Ebert then beat Maddox Rosalin of Vicksburg 7-5, 3-6, 6-2 to reach the semifinals. There, he fell to Spencer Coates of Lakeshore 6-0, 6-2.

At second singles, Carter Oswald won his opening round match over Kevin Vicenzi 6-1, 6-1. He then fell 6-2, 6-2 to Ethan Leineke of Gull Lake in the next round.

Brody Currier won a match as well at third singles. He beat Marshall’s Landen Emmons 6-0, 6-0 in the opening round, but fell 6-1, 6-0 to top-seeded Donevin Ruchti of St. Joseph in the next round. Fourth singles saw Logan White drop a 6-1, 6-2 match to Brady Halfman of Edwardsburg in the opening round.

The second doubles team of Cooper and Easton Barkby reached the second round. They defeated Harrison Nessel and Brady Hill of Marshall 6-3, 6-3 in the opening round. The Barkbys then dropped a 6-2, 7-5 decision to Sanjan Ameresh and Ramxi Dumbke of St. Joseph in the next round.

The first doubles team of Alex Cypher and Andrew Scheske lost their opening match. Brian Young and Paxton Daniel of Niles defeated them 3-6, 6-3 and 6-1. In third doubles action, the team of Brayden Bibb and Dominic Brown fell to Abe Knight and Logan Paluzzi of Niles 3-6, 6-2, 6-3. The fourth doubles team of Johnathan Bickle and Nixon Orpilla fell in their opening match to Sean MacRitchie and Alex Steele of Plainwell at 5-7, 6-2 and 7-6 (4).
