Sunday Headlines: Great Day for Kentucky Basketball and Rugby

Date:

Several sports for UK Athletics were in play on Saturday, and quite a few saw terrific results in their competition.

Kentucky Wildcats men’s basketball edged out the Louisville Cardinals at Rupp Arena, 93-85. Lamont Butler returned from a 2-game absence in stellar fashion, scoring a game-high 33 points without missing a field goal attempt.

The win was Mark Pope’s first over Louisville as head coach of the program and the team’s 10th victory of the season.

The women’s team went on the road to Purdue, where they ran their opposition out of their own gym, 82-52. Kenny Brooks and his team are also rolling through the early part of their season with a 9-1 start.

If that isn’t enough to celebrate, Kentucky’s rugby team captured a national championship on Saturday for their second-straight Division I-AA national title.

Although Kentucky volleyball was swept by No. 1 Pitt in the Elite Eight, they still managed to have another special season under head coach Craig Skinner, including an SEC Championship.

Kentucky men’s basketball has a week off as they travel to New York City for a matchup against Ohio State in Saturday’s CBS Sports Classic, while the women’s basketball team will face Belmont on Friday at Historic Memorial Coliseum.
