Syracuse (4-3) plays its first ACC game of the season, visiting Notre Dame on Saturday (4-5) afternoon.

The Orange are coming off their largest deficit of the season, falling at No. 3 Tennessee, 96-70, in the ACC/SEC Challenge. The Fighting Irish also lost in their ACC/SEC Challenge matchup, visiting Georgia and falling, 69-48.

This is the 57th all-time meeting between the two programs, with Syracuse leading the series, 34-22. Syracuse has won the last three-straight games against Notre Dame, including an 88-85 win in the dome last season.

Syracuse is still without top-scorer JJ Starling, after it was announced Wednesday he broke his left hand. Orange head coach Adrian Autry said there’s no specific timeline for Starling’s return, but that the injury isn’t season-ending.

The Fighting Irish are also without last seasons’s ACC Rookie of the Year, Markus Burton, who suffered a knee injury last week. Burton’s injury happened early in a game against Rutgers on Nov. 26, and is likely to miss a large portion of the regular season.

Both Syracuse and Notre Dame haven’t won a game without Starling or Burton this year — the Orange being 0-1 and the Fighting Irish are 0-3.

Without Starling, Autry called on Georgia State transfer Lucas Taylor to step into the starting lineup. Elijah Moore came off the bench against Tennessee, scoring 24 points to lead the Orange in their loss against the Vols.

Meanwhile, Notre Dame head coach Micah Shrewsberry has used Imes Logan and Julian Roper as starters to replace Burton. The duo have scored a combined six points and 19 rebounds in the three games without Burton.

A key battle to watch for: who can dominate in the paint.

Eddie Lampkin scored just six points and four rebounds against Tennessee on Wednesday, playing for 23 minutes. He’s also the one of two Syracuse players with at least two double-doubles so far this season, Chris Bell being the other.

Lampkin go toe-to-toe against Notre Dame’s center Kebab Nije, a 6-10 transfer from Penn State. He’s averaging 6.7 points and leads Notre Dame in rebounds, playing roughly 22 minutes per game.

These two big men will likely be catalysts in how their respective teams perform in this ACC matchup. Nije and Lampkin both know how to box out, how to score and how to frustrated their opponents.

But what will Autry change when Nije is on the sideline, and vice versa for Shrewsberry? The battle in the paint between these two teams can make or break this game on either side, but also will the bench performances.
