First half

Pregame

Syracuse (1-0) hosts one of its Upstate New York rivals in Colgate (1-1).

This will be the 176th matchup between the two teams. The Orange hold the all-time series lead 128-47. Last time the two teams matched up was a season ago when SU overcame a 24-point deficit in the second half.

Syracuse is coming off a highly contested 86-82 win against Le Moyne in its season debut.

Early turnovers and defensive miscues put SU in a hole early. But an improved offensive second half where the Orange shot just under 60% from the field helped them pull away.

Delaware transfer Jyare Davis led the way with a 22-point, 12-rebound double-double. Freshman Donnie Freeman recorded 10 points and 11 rebounds in his collegiate debut.

Colgate fell in its previous matchup against Drexel, losing 73-56 on the road. The Raiders were the preseason favorites to win the Patriot League.

Leading Colgate are seniors Jeff Woodward and Nicolas Louis-Jacques. Woodward is averaging almost 16 points per game and seven boards, while Louis-Jacques scores 13 a night and shoots over 40% from deep.

One thing to keep an eye on: getting off the starting block fast

The Orange started its season opener with four turnovers in the first five minutes, and that allowed the Dolphins to take a lead they wouldn’t relinquish until the second half.

These early season games are meant to be tune-ups for what looks to be a tough ACC schedule in the second half of the year.

Against top teams in the conference with high-end firepower like Duke and North Carolina, having early turnovers can put Syracuse in deficits it may not be able to recover from. Taking care of the ball in tonight’s matchup will be a step in the right direction.
