Teen driver arrested in deadly west Phoenix hit-and-run crash, police say

Date:

An early Saturday morning crash in Phoenix left one man dead and another facing multiple charges.

Officers responded about 6 a.m. to the area of 58th Drive and Encanto Boulevard to reports about a collision with injuries. Officers found that one driver had fled the scene, according to police.

At the scene, officers found that the driver of the other vehicle, 51-year-old Aquileo Najera, had not survived his injuries and was pronounced dead, police said.

Working from leads, officers located the other driver at a nearby home and arrested him, police said. He was identified as Jesus Enrique Renteria Arroyo, 19.

Police said a preliminary investigation suggested Renteria Arroyo was speeding south on 58th Drive and ran a stop sign at Encanto, where his vehicle struck Najera’s eastbound vehicle on that street.

Renteria Arroyo was charged with manslaughter, leaving the scene of an accident that resulted in death or serious physical injury and multiple DUI counts in connection with the fatal crash, according to police.

In custody, Renteria Arroyo admitted he was impaired, police said.

“Additional details about the collision remain part of the ongoing investigation,” said a statement by Phoenix police.
