Tennis: Bulldogs edge EC 3-2 for sectional title

Oct. 7—In the tennis sectional championship at East Central, Batesville and the Trojans play a match that those in attendance will remember for some time.

Batesville’s Carson Meyer defeated East Central’s Carter Smith 6-1, 6-3 at No. 3 singles. Batesville’s Jevan Smith lost 6-0, 6-3 to East Central’s Brenden Griffin at No. 2 singles to tie the championship match at 1-1. The other three matches went the maximum three sets.

Batesville’s No. 1 doubles team of Lincoln Garrett and Deev Ranka picked up the Bulldogs’ second point with a 6-4, 4-6, 6-0 over East Central’s Bo Nobbe and Noah Kraus. Batesville’s No. 1 singles player Caleb Mohr dropped a 3-setter to Joel Richter to give the Trojans a second point 4-6, 6-1, 6-0. Richter advances in the tournament as an individual.

The match came down to the No. 2 doubles matchup between Batesville’s Owen Westerfeld and Wes Peters against East Central’s Owen Mersmann and Owen Vollmer. The Trojans took the first set 6-4 and led 5-3 in the second set, needing just one game to win the match and sectional crown. Westerfeld and Peters fought off two match points to force a tiebreaker in which the Bulldogs won 7-6 (7-4).

All the momentum went to the Bulldog duo in the third set with Westerfeld and Peters winning the third set 6-1 to seal the sectional title for the Bulldogs 4-6, 7-6 (7-4), 6-1.

The Bulldogs (12-10) advance to the Columbus North Regional to face the No. 5 Bull Dogs Tuesday.

Rushville

The host Spartans of Connersville won the sectional title over Rushville 5-0 Saturday. Connersville advances to the regional at Center Grove to face Perry Meridian Tuesday.

At No. 1 singles, Connersville’s Kolton DeBoard defeated Rushville’s Wesley Mauzy 6-0, 6-0. At No. 2 singles, Connersville’s Anthony Struewing knocked off Rushville’s Mason Mosburg 6-1, 6-1. Connersville’s Clayton Roszell won the No. 3 singles match over Rushville’s Clayton Chase 6-1, 6-2.

In doubles, Connersville’s No. 1 team of Abel Parsley and Maddox Rees defeated Rushville’s Aiden Philpot and Jacob Schwendenman 6-2, 6-1. At No. 2 doubles, Connersville’s Jay McMullen and Logan Young defeated Rushville’s Edgar Fernandez and Brady Martz 6-0, 6-1.
