Tennis: Bulldogs, Lions advance to sectional final

Oct. 4—Rushville

CONNERSVILLE — The Lions traveled to Connersville to face Union County for semifinal action against Union County. Rushville advanced to the sectional final with a 4-1 victory over the Patriots.

Rushville’s Wesley Mauzy defeated Cameron Salsbery 6-2, 6-4 at No. 1 singles. At No. 2 singles, Rushville’s Mason Mosburg knocked off Grady Coyle 6-2, 6-0. At No. 3 singles, Rushville’s Clayton Chase defeated Isaih Lowe 6-4, 6-0.

Rushville’s No. 1 doubles team of Aiden Philpot and Jacob Schwendenman fell 6-2, 6-1 to Logan Boone and Dalton Creech.

At No. 2 doubles, Rushville’s Edgar Fernandez and Brady Martz won a 3-setter over Grant Cox and Jackson Hertel 6-1, 4-6, 7-6.

Connersville defeated Franklin County 4-1 to advance to the final. The Spartans and Lions square off for the sectional title Saturday.

Batesville

ST. LEON — The Bulldogs’ tennis team earned a right to play for the sectional title at East Central with a 5-0 victory over Lawrenceburg in the semifinal.

Batesville’s Caleb Mohr defeated Ollie Safayvian 6-4, 7-6 (7-0) in the No. 1 singles match. At No. 2 singles, Batesville’s Jevan Smith knocked off Cayden Green 6-0, 6-2. Batesville’s Carson Meyer defeated Jason Bray 6-4, 6-0 at No. 3 singles.

Batesville’s No. 1 doubles team of Lincoln Garrett and Deev Ranka cruised to a 6-1, 6-2 win over Trevor Fricke and Will Tufts. At No. 2 doubles, Batesville’s Wes Peters and Owen Westerfeld gave up just one game in defeating Brogan Hall and Cooper Plumb 6-1, 6-0.

The Bulldogs advance to the sectional championship at 9:30 a.m. Saturday against the host Trojans. The Bulldogs are now 11-10 on the season and are looking to win their sixth straight sectional title.

Greensburg

COLUMBUS — The Pirates traveled to Columbus North and were eliminated in the sectional by No. 5 Bull Dogs 5-0.

At No. 1 singles, Hank Lin defeated Greensburg’s Mason McNulty 6-0, 6-0. Greensburg’s Dan Fisse lost the No. 2 singles match 6-2, 6-0 to Parth Shah. At No. 3 singles, Greensburg’s Jacob Duerstock lost a 3-setter to Teddy Littrell 4-6, 6-3, 6-3.

In doubles, Columbus North’s No. 1 duo of Yoki Murabayashi and Vince Sasse knocked off Greensburg’s Jack McKinsey and Reece Beaver 6-3, 7-6. At No. 2 doubles, Greensburg’s Reece Chapman and Wade Schutte were defeated 6-0, 6-0 by Sashu Sabapathy and Michael Crossman.
