The run-out saga
In the ongoing Women’s T20 World Cup in the UAE, the match between India and New Zealand saw a bit of controversy. After Amelia Kerr knocked the ball down to long-off and picked up a single, the umpire handed the cap over to Deepti Sharma, implying that the over was called. However, just a second after that, Kerr and Sophie Devine ran a quick second that saw the former fall short at the striker’s end. Despite this, Kerr was given not out, as the umpire had called over, and anything that happens after that is moot. Here’s Gaurav Nandan Tripathi with a thorough explanation.
Russell blasts CPL organisers
Veteran all-rounder Andre Russell was not pleased with the fact that a floodlight failure cost his side Trinbago Knight Riders (TKR) a shot at progressing in the competition. During the Eliminator against Barbados Royals (BR), TKR were in pole position at 168/3 in 19.1 overs, with Nicholas Pooran cruising towards a ton. However, a floodlight failure brought an end to the innings and when the issue was sorted, the Royals were given a target of 60 in five overs, which they got to with nine wickets and four balls to spare. Russell was not pleased and launched a scathing attack on the organisers on social media.
“Am not the person to come on the internet and voice my opinion but this year CPL I feel robbed this light situation was f****y,” he posted on his Instagram story.
What’s happening at the Women’s World Cup?
We are eight matches into the Women’s T20 World Cup 2024, which is being played in the UAE, and sadly, we are yet to see a close encounter. On October 6 (Sunday) Mayank Yadav and Nitish Kumar Reddy made their international debut in the first T20 International (T20I) against Bangladesh in Gwalior. Mayank started off with a maiden before finishing with 1/21, while Reddy remained unbeaten on 16 in an easy chase. While it was a massive moment for the duo, their debuts have caused a massive headache to their Indian Premier League (IPL) franchises, who now cannot retain them as an uncapped player for INR 4 crore, according to the latest rules. Mumbai claim Irani Cup after 27 years
Mumbai rode on Sarfaraz Khan’s unbeaten 222 to post a mammoth 537 in their first innings, which propelled Mumbai to their first Irani Cup win in 27 years. Despite a superb 191 from Abhimanyu Easwaran – his fourth ton in seven innings – Rest of India (RoI) conceded a 121-run first-innings deficit. RoI had a sniff when they had Mumbai at 125/6 at one stage, but an unbeaten century from Tanush Kotian (114*) and his solid 158 partnership with Mohit Avasthi (51*) was enough to secure the title for Mumbai.
Vaibhav Suryavanshi
A teenage prodigy, Vaibhav Suryavanshi became the youngest centurion in the sport’s history, as the 13-year-old smashed 104 in the first unofficial Test against Australia Under-19 in Chennai. He scored 104 at a strike rate of 167.74 in an innings studded with 14 fours and four sixes. He didn’t get many in the second innings, but India Under-19 went on to win the match by two wickets.
