‘The good news’: Arsenal handed big injury update on £38m star before Liverpool clash – report

Arsenal returned to winning ways on Tuesday night with a 1-0 triumph over Shakhtar Donetsk in the Champions League.

An own goal was the decider in the contest, but the Gunners could have easily won the game by a bigger scoreline in the end.

Leandro Trossard failed to convert a penalty for the London giants while Gabriel Jesus missed a clear-cut chance to find the net.

The game also witnessed Riccardo Calafiori picking up a knee injury, but the concern is not serious, as per Sky Sport Italia.

The outlet have made contact with the left-back’s entourage and they have received a positive update.

‘The good news’ is that Calafiori has suffered a minor medial ligament injury on his right knee and could be out for a few weeks.

This is highlighted as a boost for Arsenal. It was initially suggested that the £38 million-rated star could be out for many months.

Calafiori’s injury has come at worst possible time

Calafiori’s injury has come at the worst possible time for the Gunners, considering William Saliba is already suspended for the Liverpool game.

Aside from Saliba, Jurrien Timber and Takehiro Tomiyasu are doubtful after respective injuries and manager Mikel Arteta has a selection headache.

Timber is the closest to returning to action and Arteta will be hoping for good news in tomorrow’s training session. If the Dutchman is fit, he could partner Gabriel Magalhaes in central defence.

Oleksandr Zinchenko and Jakub Kiwior are options to start at left-back, but both are defensively vulnerable and have struggled with their positioning against counter-attacks.

In our view, Arteta should not hesitate handing a full debut to Myles Lewis-Skelly, who completed 100% of his passes against Shakhtar after coming on to replace Calafiori.

Tomiyasu is another option, but we don’t see the Japanese starting. He has played just six minutes since the start of pre-season as he continues to struggle with a knee issue.
