The New KING of Indian cricket – Australia media hails Yashasvi Jaiswal as Virat Kohli’s successor | Sporting News India

Date:

Yashasvi Jaiswal’s rise in Indian cricket has drawn international recognition, with Australian media now dubbing him as “The New King.”

While Shubman Gill has often been seen as the heir to India’s batting throne, Jaiswal’s current form has prompted comparisons to Virat Kohli and even Virender Sehwag.

As India gears up for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, all eyes are on Jaiswal to see if he can perform in the tough conditions of Australia and live up to the new title that suggests he’s poised to succeed Kohli’s legacy.

Why has Yashasvi Jaiswal drawn such acclaim in Australia?

From his challenging beginnings to his rise through domestic cricket and the IPL, Jaiswal’s story is marked by resilience. Born in Uttar Pradesh, he moved to Mumbai with aspirations of a cricketing career.

This dedication bore fruit as Jaiswal quickly became a standout in India’s cricketing circles, catching the attention of fans and now international media with his remarkable performances.

His career is highlighted by landmark achievements that underscore his potential. His Test debut against the West Indies in 2023 saw him score a stunning 171 runs.

Building on this, he scored double centuries in two games earlier this year and became the first Indian batter to score 1,000 Test runs in a calendar year before turning 23—a feat only a few batsmen in history have accomplished.

How do Australian Media view Jaiswal’s prospects as Kohli’s successor?

In a detailed feature, The Daily Telegraph introduced Jaiswal as “India’s next superstar” and described him as the most dynamic Indian opener since Sehwag, with an aggressive style that hasn’t been seen since Kohli’s prime.

The report says, “Yashasvi Jaiswal is the most aggressive opener to come out of India since Virender Sehwag and the country’s most exciting batter since Virat Kohli.”

The title, “The New King,” reflects Australia’s high regard for his talent. Jaiswal’s ability to perform on bouncier, unfamiliar pitches remains to be seen.

The Australian media points out that his success so far has largely been in subcontinental and Caribbean conditions, with a challenging tour in South Africa where he struggled to adapt to bounce and pace.

The report further says, “The bulk of Jaiswal’s success to date has come in the drier conditions of the subcontinent and the Caribbean. In his lone Test tour of South Africa, he averaged 12.50 and in three of his four innings he was done in by the bounce.”
