‘The Rule Is Black And White, Supposed To Be’: Rod Brind’Amour On Failed Challenge, Loss In Colorado

Date:

The Carolina Hurricanes fell 6-4 to the Colorado Avalanche Saturday night.

It was a good start to the Canes who jumped out to an early 2-0 lead, but a five-goal second period by the Avalanche quickly saw the game get away from Carolina.

After the game, Hurricanes coach Rod Brind’Amour spoke with the media in Colorado. Here’s what he had to say:

On the game: The shorthanded goal killed us. They were pretty flat but then you could see what they were like once they got going. So that was the play of the game and then the goalie interference thing, for me, that was the game. It’s a one-goal game essentially. So those two things kind of flipped the game for us.

On Spencer Martin: He was good. It’s tough because you give up a bunch of goals and it looks bad, but he made a lot of big saves. They have a world class player. An elite, elite player and he was on full force tonight.

On Jordan Martinook: He just plays hard. He’s been getting rewarded here with some goals. He was impactful. A couple of guys just didn’t have it tonight. You could see we were just out of gas and I kind of expected that and that’s what happened in the second half of the game.

On the goalie interference challenge: The goalie challenge thing is the game, for me. The rule is black and white… supposed to be. There’s contact before the puck goes in. We’ve got a freeze frame where his skate is on our goalie’s skate before it goes in and then to be told that there’s absolutely no contact? What are we doing guys, what are we doing? That’s all I’m going to say on that.

On if day-of travel played a part in the game: There’s no excuses because we came out really well, but once we got into it, you could see we were just hanging on really and you can’t hang on against that team.

On resetting: We’ve got to get some rest and just refocus. Half that game was good so maybe we focus more on that part of it.
