Just like on the scoreboard, the Canuck lost the analytics battle to the Lightning. While Vancouver did have a slight edge in even-strength shots, Tampa Bay generated more scoring chances (22-20) as well as high-danger chances (12-8). The Lightning also had a large advantage in xGF%, with the Canucks finishing at 41.02%.

While special teams impacted the heatmap, it shows Vancouver’s inability to clear the front of the net. Tampa Bay had no issues creating chances from high-danger areas, with Kevin Lankinen making seven saves on eight high-danger shots. Whether it was failing to box players out or allowing cross-ice passes, the Canucks struggled to shut down the Lightning throughout the game.

One forward line that had a strong game was the trio of Dakota Joshua, Pius Suter, and Conor Garland. During their 8:34 of ice time, Vancouver held a 4-2 shots advantage, a 1-0 goals advantage and produced six scoring chances compared to one against. While it has taken some time, this trio continues to get better game by game.

Lastly, while he only played 9:34, Max Sasson had a solid game for the Canucks. He recorded an individual high-danger chance and was on the ice for four scoring chances. While he has only played seven NHL games, Sasson is showing he can find ways to impact the game while playing in a fourth-line role.
