A hole-in-one by Charlie Woods and birdies on eight of the last 10 holes with his father Tiger Woods wasn’t enough to win the PNC Championship on Sunday.
That honor, for the second year in a row and fifth time overall with two sons, belongs once more to Bernard Langer.
Langer drained a 15-foot eagle putt at the par-5 18th hole of the Ritz-Carlton Golf Club in Orlando to join his son Jason in defending their championship, turning back the challenge of Woods and his son.
The two teams were tied through 18 holes and once again through 36, both shooting 14-under 58 under the two-player scramble format. They each finished regulation at 28-under-par 116, breaking the scoring record of 27-under held by John Daly and his son John Daly II.
TOM D’ANGELO: Tiger Woods’ approach to PNC — ‘just trying to have fun’ — rubbing off on Charlie
Both teams made 13 birdies and an eagle: Charlie Woods’ hole-in-one at No. 4 and Bernard Langer’s eagle putt at No. 5.
Tiger, Charlie Woods had eagle chances at 18
Charlie Woods and Bernhard Langer both hit the fairway at No. 18. Tiger Woods landed his second shot 25 feet away, pin-high, and Jason Langer pounded his second shot to within 15 feet of the hole.
Tiger and Charlie both missed their eagle attempts — Charlie Woods nicking the right edge of the cup — and Jason Langer was short on his eagle attempt.
That left it to the 67-year-old Langer, who earlier this fall won the PGA Tour Champions Schwab Cup, his 47th Champions Tour title and his 134th worldwide victory. Langer curled the putt into the side of the hole and threw both arms skyward.
Teams with First Coast ties contend
Three teams tied for third at 23-under, two with First Coast ties and both with a PNC Championship trophy in the family: Jacksonville native David Duval and his son Brady (58); Ponte Vedra Beach resident Vijay Singh and his son Qass (62); and Padraig Harrington and his son Paddy (61).
The Duval team led the field with 14 birdies in the final round. They birdied the last six.
Duval and his step-son Nick Karavites won in 2016 and the Singhs won in 2022.
Langer has won with two sons
Langer’s PNC title gives him three with Jason Langer, the first coming in 2014.
He won in 2005 and 2006 with his son Stefan.
Tiger Woods, who has won 82 PGA Tour titles and 15 major championships, has yet to win the father-son tournament with Charlie.
