Add another sport to the mix. After golf got the 2024 fall season going, cross country runners took the course Thursday.
These Fantastic Five athletes are making their names known early after strong performances Thursday:
Quinn Cook, Hopedale boys cross country
He showed off his early season speed, winning the inaugural Dual Valley Conference Jamboree race at Nipmuc in 17 minutes, 48 seconds. His Blue Raiders teammate Ben stone followed in second (17:59). Wesley Ludwigson of Nipmuc came in third (18:00).
Colin Haynes, Hopedale golf
He carded a 37 to take the medalist spot for the second consecutive match, as the Blue Raiders beat Douglas 168-195 for their first Duval Valley Conference win. Trevor Lachiatto added a 41 for Hopedale (2-0, 1-0 DVC) at Hopedale Country Club.

Aarav Lavu, Wellesley golf
He fired a 3-under-33 at Nehoiden Golf Club to lead the Raiders to a 135-115 victory in the Stableford scoring system against Braintree in their opener.
Mikey McGovern, Holliston golf
He led the Panthers with a 36 in their season opener against Westwood at Pinecrest, but Holliston fell 216-254.
Avery Orff, Nipmuc girls cross country
She crossed the line second at the Dual Valley Conference Jamboree at Nipmuc Regional. Orff finished the race in 22:13. Her Warriors teammate Gretchen Uthoff followed in third (23:01). Hopedale’s Mabel Carreiro finished fifth (23:37).
