Tom Kim apologizes for breaking locker door after playoff loss on DP World Tour

Date:

Tom Kim apologized on social media on Monday after he damaged his locker room door following a playoff loss at the DP World Tour’s Genesis Championship in South Korea on Sunday.

Byeong-Hun An beat Kim in a playoff at the tournament after Kim’s birdie putt on the final hole just barely lipped out. That would have given Kim the win in regulation, but instead sent the two into a playoff. An then won the event at Jack Nicklaus Golf Club in Incheon, South Korea, on the first hole to claim the title.

After congratulating An, Kim went into the locker room and broke the door to his locker out of frustration. The door came completely off its hinges.

“After the loss I was frustrated, yes absolutely,” Kim wrote on Instagram, in part. “But I can assure you with absolute truth that I had no intent of damaging any part of the locker, not a single bit.

“I addressed it with the DP World Tour and the KPGA right after the incident saying that the door came off.”

Kim said he offered to pay for the damages, and that the matter was considered closed by the DP World Tour.

“I am grateful to everyone that’s reached out with messages of support, but to them and everyone else that I may have let down, I apologize with all my heart,” he wrote.

The incident is the latest Kim has been involved with this fall. He called out American players at the Presidents Cup in Montreal last month for “cursing at us” during the match. He later apologized to U.S. captain Jim Furyk and Xander Schauffele for his comments.

Kim has won three times on the PGA Tour in his career, though not since the 2023 Shriners Children’s Open. He won his first two tournaments in just a three-month stretch in 2022, and he had two top-10 finishes on Tour last season — including a playoff loss to Scottie Scheffler at the Travelers Championship in June. Kim, who is currently ranked No. 25 in the world, has yet to win on the DP World Tour.
