PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — A freight train crashed into a broken-down cement truck in eastern Oregon on Nov 19., authorities say.
The crash occurred after Nampa Idaho man Reed Hirkeby left the Ash Grove cement plant near Durkee, Ore. before 6 a.m., the Baker County Sheriff’s Office said. Hirkeby was allegedly crossing the railroad tracks on Shirttail Creek Road when part of the cement truck trailer broke, leaving the vehicle stuck on the tracks.

“Kirkeby made several attempts to move the trailer off the tracks but was unsuccessful,” the Baker County Sheriff’s Office said. “He exited the vehicle and was in the process of notifying Union Pacific Railroad when the train struck the vehicle.”

An incoming Union Pacific train hit the cement truck at approximately 5:56 a.m. Photos of the crash show that the train hit the truck with enough force to knock the trailer off the back of the truck and crumple its cement drum. However, the train did not derail.

No one was injured in the crash, authorities say. The wreck blocked the Shirttail Creek Road crossing for several hours until crews were able to clear the scene.
