Americans traveling to Mexico for spring break will want to pay close attention to a recent advisory issued by the U.S. Embassy and Consulates in Mexico.

The advisory urges travelers to “travel smart ― be informed” when visiting the country, especially after dark in downtown popular areas in Cancun, Playa Del Carmen, and Tulum. Issues like crime, drugs, unregulated alcohol, and sexual assault were outlined in the message.

Here’s what to know about the advisory and where the most popular spring break destinations are in 2025.

What issues should I be aware of when traveling to Mexico this spring?

∎ Crime: Crime can occur anywhere in Mexico, especially in popular tourist destinations.

∎ Drugs: It is illegal to possess and use drugs in Mexico, including medical marijuana. This may result in a lengthy jail sentence. Severe illness or death may also result as a consequence of using synthetic drugs or fake prescription pills.

∎ Unregulated alcohol: U.S. citizens have reported losing consciousness or becoming injured after consuming contaminated alcohol.

∎ Pharmaceuticals: Purchase medication from reputable places and consult a medical professional to avoid the dangerous effects of counterfeit medication.

∎ Sexual assault: Drunk or isolated individuals may fall victim to rape or sexual assault. Perpetrators may use drugs to alter the victim’s mental or physical state.

∎ Drowning: When visiting the beach, be aware of strong currents and rip tides. Some beaches may not have lifeguards on duty, warnings, or signs indicating unsafe conditions.

∎ Medical emergencies: If you require medical attention, please note that private hospital prices may be more expensive in Mexico than in the U.S., potentially requiring upfront payment.

∎ Guns and ammunition: All guns and ammunition are illegal in Mexico. Violators may face a lengthy jail sentence.

∎ Arrests: In Mexico, it is illegal to be drunk and disorderly, urinate in public, or have open alcohol containers in vehicles. Breaking Mexican law may lead to arrest.

∎ Immigration: Violating the terms of your stay in Mexico may lead to fines and detention.

What are the most popular spring break destinations in 2025?

USA TODAY reported that Las Vegas, Orlando, Florida, Miami, Cancun, Mexico, San Juan, Puerto Rico, and Punta Cana, Dominican Republic were among the most popular spring break destinations for travelers this year. Hopper data shows that airfare prices to many of these destinations have increased compared to what they were during spring break in 2024.
