Tyrone Mings bizarre error gives Club Brugge deserved win over Aston Villa in Champions League

Tyrone Mings made a bizarre mistake during Aston Villa’s clash with Club Brugge in the Champions League that gifted the home side all three points. The English defender picked the ball up after being passed the ball from goalkeeper Emi Martinez. Mings felt that the goal kick had not been taken at the time, but it looked clear on the replay that Martinez was passing the ball to the defender to restart the game.

It took a VAR intervention to give Club what was a clear penalty. Captain Hans Vanaken stepped up to give Club a deserved win on the night. In truth, Club have been excellent in most of their matches in the competition so far. They were unlucky to lose both to Dortmund and to AC Milan, while they should have won by more against Sturm Graz. The home side created more chances and had seven shots on target the Aston Villa’s one. Unai Emery’s men had more of the ball, but failed to create too many clear cut chances.

Villa drop points for the first time in the competition in a game that they would have looked at on paper as a good chance of picking up points. For Club, they now have six points and have given themselves a good chance of making the top 24 sides. They face a trip to Glasgow and a clash with Celtic next.
